Kolkata: Four persons, including two children, were killed after a man set his brothers’ house on fire over some family dispute. The incident took place on Sunday night at Manikchak in Malda.According to a local resident, Gedu Mondal lived at Madantola village in Manikchak. He had four sons, two of them—Makhan and Lakshman — lived in their own houses while other two Bikash and Gobinda were living together. Gedu used to work as a national volunteer force member in state police and died while performing duty. After his death, his youngest son Gobinda was provided a job by the state government on die in harness ground. But Makhan was not happy with the decision as he wanted that job. Due to this the relationship between Gobinda and Makhan soured. Both of them got involved in altercations frequently over this issue. Local residents said on Sunday around 2 am, Makhan allegedly poured petrol on the house where Gobinda and Bikash lived with their families and fled. They doused the fire and rushed the nine injured persons to the Malda Medical College and Hospital where Gobinda’s daughter identified as Priya (3) was declared brought dead by the doctors. On Monday morning his elder daughter Debashree (4) also died at the hospital. Later, Gobinda and Bikash also succumbed to their injuries. Five others are still undergoing treatment at the hospital. Two of them are said to be critical. Local residents and hospital authority informed the Manichak police station about the incident. Though no formal complaint was filed till Monday night, sleuths have initiated a case suo moto and commenced search operation to nab Makhan. The police are also questioning Lakshman to know the whereabouts of his brother. It is also being investigated if Lakhsman has any connection with the incident or not.
