State casinos see 20% drop in yearly revenue after pandemic shut downs

first_imgDES MOINES — The administrator of the Iowa Racing and Gaming Commission says revenues for the fiscal year that ended in June are down about 20% after the shutdowns forced by the coronavirus pandemic.Brian Ohorilko says the governor ordered casinos closed March 17th and weren’t allowed to open until May 31st. “Those months that were closed really did have a significant impact. Up until the pandemic, the industry had been doing really well. I think some of that could be attributed to the impact from sports wagering,”Ohorilko says.Casinos were allowed to start offering sports betting at the end of September last year — and most had their operations up and going as the new year started.  He says 20 percent is a significant drop in revenue — and had it not been for the good first and second quarters the loses could have been more. The report released Thursday showed gross casino revenues for the fiscal year were $1,163,416,237 dollars — a drop of almost $300 million from the last fiscal year. Ohorilko says things have not gotten back to the levels they were before the COVID-19 outbreak.“We have seen admissions down — but spending was up in a number of casinos — especially in eastern Iowa. Those casinos had some of the best months they’ve had in a long time,” according to Ohorilko. “But I think a lot of that could be attributed to Illinois still being shut down and people that are interested in gambling coming to Iowa to do that.”Ohorilko says it is still not clear how much the industry will rebound and when. He is sure that the state-licensed casinos are not in any trouble of closing. “At this point, there really is no concern about them being viable. All 19 casinos were able to if they had debt, able to get help servicing that debt,” he says. Many of the casinos have re-opened with less staff due to restrictions on the capacity that are still in place to prevent the spread of COVID-19. Ohorilko says the measures taken by casinos have led to more efficiencies in operation — and that could be a positive as they move forward.“They are using technology to help cash gaming tickets, to exchange chips, so it’s really just the implementation of technology to help automate some of the processes that normally would involve human contact and hand-to-hand touch. So we are seeing some of that right now,” Ohorilko says. The state reported it saw a drop of $64.5 million in gambling tax revenue brought on by the shutdownHere’s the fiscal year report:  fytd2020 gaminglast_img read more

Olympia Landscape Designer Recommends Unusual Flowering Trees

first_imgFacebook0Tweet0Pin0 Submitted by Mary Jo BuzaTrees define the character of the landscape. In the garden, trees serve many purposes – both aesthetic and practical. They offer cooling shade on a hot summer day, provide shelter for wildlife, and add spring flowers or fall color.  Trees also establish perspective -they can frame a vista or block an unattractive feature. With the shrinking size of our urban/suburban gardens the big challenge is selecting the right tree for the right space. Local Olympia nurseries carry a good selection of patio trees that are ideal for the small spaces.  The best patio trees are small and relatively slow growing, with a mature height of 30 feet or less; they have well mannered roots that won’t uplift paving; and are relatively free of insect and disease problems.I have included a list of patio trees for gardeners here in Olympia that are small in stature and have unusual flowers, fruit or leaves. If you are looking for something different from the flowering cherry tree or purple flowering plum tree consider planting one of the varieties listed here.Japanese Stewartia – Stewartia pseudocameliaJapanese Stewartia trees possess beautiful flowers in spring and red and orange leaves in the fall.  The stewartia tree blooms in June, a time when few other trees are flowering. The two to three inch flowers resemble a white camellia and have contrasting yellow stamens. A Stewartia tree will appreciate light shade during a hot summer afternoon, but will tolerate full sun. The young trees require regular watering the first 3-5 years.Japanese Snowdrop – Styrax japonicaThis handsome tree has a graceful habit that is characterized by a horizontal branching pattern.  Here in Olympia the dainty white bell-shaped flowers appear in late May. Japanese Snowdrop grows in full sun or light shade. But, avoid planting this tree near or around the southwest side of a building because it dislikes reflective heat.  This tree is drought tolerant once established and it has few pest or disease problems. Did I mention the flowers are fragrant? Yes, very!Redbud – Cercis canadensis Redbuds are famous for their abundant and striking flowers that appear in late spring. Flower colors range from white, pale rose to a deep magenta.  The attractive heart shaped leaves turn yellow in the fall. ‘Forest Pansy’ is a popular variety that grows in light shade, has purple leaves and twigs bear deep pink flowers. Redbud is also referred to as Eastern Redbud or North American Redbud.Crabapple – MalusCrabapple trees have a history of severe disease problems.  So severe I stopped include then in designs. Over the years; however, growers have developed disease resistant varieties that are no longer susceptible to fire blight, cedar apple rust, scab, and powdery mildew.  They possess handsome white, pink, or red flowers with fruit that is edible, showy, or both. The showy red or yellow fruit can persist into winter adding another season of color. Crabapples are more tolerant of wet soils than flowering cherries. Here in the South Sound our native Pacific Crabapple prefers to grow near and around wetlands.Author and landscape designer, Mary Jo Buza has over 20 years experience maintaining, designing and teaching gardening in the South Sound region.  For more information on a custom landscape design or consultation call 923-1733 or visit her website: www.maryjobuza.com.last_img read more

Powered by Firework The co-owner of KXIP, Ness Wadia has expressed his opinion about introducing the National anthem before the beginning of every match in Indian Premier League. According to Ness Wadia, there is no need of arranging an opening ceremony in Indian Premier League. Rather it would be better if national anthem can be played before the start of all the matches.Advertisement Ness Wadia has also mentioned that even in movie theatres, the national anthem is played before the beginning of the movie. Even in Indian Super League and Pro Kabaddi League, the national anthem is played before the start of every match. The national anthem is also played before every match in NBA.So, BCCI should introduce this in the upcoming edition of Indian Premier League. Ness Wadia told that he had wrote many letters to BCCI for introduction of the national anthem before every game. Now, he will also like to write a letter to the new President of BCCI, Sourav Ganguly about this matter.Advertisement Also, the teams in Indian Premier League are interested to play preseason friendlies against other sides of the rest of the World. It might be helpful for them to increase the brand value of the team World wide.Watch: Harmanpreet plucks astonishing one handed wonder catch at boundary line against West IndiesAdvertisement Advertisementlast_img read more

Split watermelons, animated stop signs teach traffic safety

first_imgAfter seeing what could happened in even a low-impact crash, students indicated they were willing to wear helmets while biking. In 2005, 27 children were injured and one was killed in pedestrian or bicycle collisions with cars in Lancaster. Officials have set a goal of reducing injuries by 20 percent by June 30, 2008, and eliminating any deaths. “There are so many injuries and deaths we can avoid if we practice a little safety,” Hearns said. “We have to think safety first.” The safety education is being provided by Safe Moves, a nonprofit organization founded by Pat Hines, a former vice president of RKO Radio who lost a friend in a bicycle accident. “We want them to process information by looking at their surroundings,” Hines said. “When a ball goes into the street, the first instinct is to go after the ball. You need to stop and look to see if cars are coming or go get a grown-up to go get it.” LANCASTER – School kids are getting lessons in traffic safety with the help of a couple of watermelons. The city of Lancaster is using $73,100 from the California Office of Traffic Safety to hold a series of safety workshops and rodeos at area elementary schools in an effort to cut down on accidents. On Friday, city officials and their contractor for the education effort, Safe Moves, were at Mariposa Elementary School to drive the safety message home. “Kids today don’t think it’s cool to wear a helmet,” said Mayor Henry Hearns. “We think it’s very cool to wear a helmet.” To help illustrate the point, Safe Moves used watermelons – one, dubbed “John,” split open when Hearns dropped it from waist height. The other, “Frank,” survived a drop by school Principal Sheldon Epstein. Safe Moves is conducting workshops at every grade level for each of the schools it will be visiting. For its safety rodeos, Safe Moves uses a miniature city featuring sidewalks, streets, intersections, traffic signs and signals, and railroad tracks. “Whether you are getting into a vehicle, riding a bike, or walking down the street with your children, you have to make smart choices in order to keep you and others safe,” Hearns said. james.skeen@dailynews (661) 267-5743160Want local news?Sign up for the Localist and stay informed Something went wrong. Russia to shut down factories for World Cup

first_img0Shares0000Russia will shut down dozens of major factories during this year’s World Cup to avert accidents and the possible threat of terror attacks © AFP/File / Mladen ANTONOVMOSCOW, Russian Federation, Mar 5 – Russia is overruling fearful big business owners and looking to shut down dozens of gigantic factories to avert accidents and the threat of terror attacks during this year’s World Cup.The halt in production highlights the financial sacrifice Russia is preparing to make when it hosts football’s showpiece event for the first time from June 14. But it also betrays concerns that something will go awry and a readiness to use heavy-handed tactics that could see thousands of workers going unpaid for at least five weeks.Security analysts warn that shuttering chemical plants and other high-risk enterprises is simply dangerous. The move is “a typical top-down order to make things look pretty that has nothing to do with actual safety,” said veteran security analyst Pavel Felgenhauer.“This is traditional Soviet showmanship.”– Letter of concern –China closed polluting plants and coal mines for two months across swathes of the country in 2008 to ensure the smog cleared over Beijing for the Summer Olympics. But Russian President Vladimir Putin’s decision appears to stem from a fear of industrial accidents and the threat of plants being attacked or blown up.“The threats of an accident and terror are closely related,” Moscow’s FBK Grant Thornton consultancy director Igor Nikolayev said.Russian authorities want the world to focus on the action at stadiums like the Luzhniki in Moscow, but critics say closing down heavy industry for the tournament is a heavy-handed approach © AFP/File / DMITRY SEREBRYAKOVA Putin decree from May 2017 says special security measures should cover areas around the 11 cities hosting matches and meet “a higher level of protection than those defined by the Russian government’s approved anti-terror requirements.”A separate government directive issued a month later applied the guidelines to everything from nuclear and chemical facilities to companies transporting hazardous cargo by land or sea.A strict interpretation of the directive could theoretically close Moscow’s only oil refinery and a deep-sea port in Saint Petersburg that — among other things — is licensed to ship radioactive isotopes.Feverish consultations are underway between Russia’s FSB security service and industrial property owners afraid of losing money.A private letter to the government from the RSPP big business lobby obtained by AFP warned of “extremely disagreeable social and economic consequences” if the guidelines are applied in full.“RSPP is receiving letters from companies expressing concern about possible risks during the implementation of this government decree,” the union’s chief Alexander Shokhin wrote on November 29.– Unpaid vacation –Shokhin asked for an explanation that could avoid “unfounded shutdowns of company operations.”The reply he received was brief.“The restrictions will only cover activities of organisations on the list of highly dangerous facilities,” the Rostekhnadzor nuclear and technological safety watchdog said on January 29.There is only one problem: there is no such list.“Russian industrial safety regulations do not use the term ‘highly dangerous facilities’,” a source in the petrochemical industry said on condition that his name not be used for fear of experiencing problems with the authorities.“In reality, they will probably make up the list as they go along.”The Kommersant business daily reported that hundreds of plants could possibly close — some of them 400 kilometres (250 miles) away from the nearest World Cup stadium. It also reported companies making up their best excuses to stay open.Kommersant said one unidentified factory near a World Cup host city, Saransk, told the FSB it was wiser to keep its workers busy instead of “roaming the streets with nothing to do, unhappy about being sent on unpaid vacation.”– Survival of fittest –Facilities such as a nuclear power plant close to Saint Petersburg and another one near the host city of Yekaterinburg in the Urals are almost certain to keep working due to the safety risks of a shutdown.Analysts said those likely to close will do so because they lacked the political clout in Moscow to lobby their case.“I think only the small and the weak will be affected,” FBK Grant Thornton’s Nikolayev said. The busy deep-sea port in Putin’s native Saint Petersburg appears likely to remain largely unaffected by the World Cup.But companies such as Red October — a mill producing 40 percent of Russia’s stainless steel in the host city of Volgograd — said they were complying.“We are completely stopping for the World Cup,” Red October chairman Igor Sizov told TASS. “We are all going to the football.”0Shares0000(Visited 1 times, 1 visits today)last_img read more

Man United complete Sh6.5bn move for Wan-Bissaka

first_img0Shares0000Aaron Wan-Bissaka (left) completed a move from Crystal Palace to Manchester United on Saturday © AFP / Daniel LEAL-OLIVASLONDON, United Kingdom, Jun 29 – Manchester United completed the signing of Aaron Wan-Bissaka from Crystal Palace for a reported fee of up to Sh6.5bn (£50 million) on Saturday.“Manchester United is delighted to confirm the signing of Aaron Wan-Bissaka from Crystal Palace,” United staid in a statement. “Aaron has signed a five-year contract with an option to extend for a further year.”The 21-year-old made just 42 Premier League appearances for the Eagles, but was an outstanding performer last season. An initial fee of £45 million with an extra £5 million in add-ons has reportedly been agreed between the clubs, making Wan-Bissaka the most expensive defender in United’s history.“It’s an unbelievable feeling and an honour to call myself a Manchester United player and something I know that only a small number of players have the privilege to say,” said Wan-Bissaka.The Red Devils are in need of an overhaul after finishing sixth in the Premier League last season to miss out on Champions League qualification.A long-term replacement at right-back for club captain Antonio Valencia, who left Old Trafford at the end of last season when his contract expired, was one of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s priorities in the transfer market.“Aaron is one of the best upcoming defenders in the Premier League,” said Solskjaer.“He has the right work ethic, talent and mentality to play for Manchester United and he fits exactly the type of player that we are looking to bring into the squad to help us improve and push on further.”Wan-Bissaka will become United’s second signing of the summer following the arrival of winger Daniel James from Swansea as United turn their attention towards young, British players rather than the expensive star buys of recent seasons. He will travel with his new teammates for a pre-season tour in Australia, Singapore and China after a short break to recover from a disappointing under-21 European Championships with England.Wan-Bissaka scored an injury time own goal to gift France a 2-1 victory in England’s opening game in Italy and was then dropped for matches with Romania and Croatia as Aidy Boothroyd’s side crashed out at the group stages.“I will have a short break now after the European Championships but I’m looking forward to starting training with the manager and my new team-mates on the pre-season tour,” he added.0Shares0000(Visited 2 times, 1 visits today)last_img read more
